Struggling With Fibroids? Here’s What To Know!

Fibroids can be a frustrating and exhausting condition for many women. While some experience no symptoms at all, others struggle with heavy bleeding, pain, bloating, and relentless fatigue. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone – and you don’t have to just ‘put up with it’ either.

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus, most common in women of reproductive age. They tend to shrink after menopause, but for those dealing with symptoms now, waiting for menopause isn’t exactly a practical solution! The good news? There are things you can do to support your body naturally, helping to manage symptoms and promote hormone balance.

What Causes Fibroids?

Fibroids are strongly linked to hormone imbalances, particularly an excess of oestrogen relative to progesterone. This hormonal imbalance can be influenced by multiple factors, including:

  • Diet – A diet low in fibre, high in ultra-processed foods, alcohol, caffeine, and insufficient protein can contribute to hormonal imbalance and inflammation.
  • Detoxification Issues – The body needs to effectively clear excess oestrogen through the liver and gut. If these pathways are sluggish, oestrogen can build up, exacerbating fibroid growth.
  • Environmental Toxins – Chemicals in plastics, pesticides, and household products can act as endocrine disruptors, interfering with hormone regulation.
  • Stress – Chronic stress leads to increased cortisol production, which can throw sex hormones out of balance.
  • Sedentary Lifestyle – Regular exercise supports circulation, hormone metabolism, and detoxification – all key for fibroid management.

The Gut-Hormone Connection

If you’re struggling with fibroids (or any hormone-related issue), your gut health is likely playing a role. All of my clients dealing with hormone imbalances have the option of a comprehensive stool test. This can reveal:

  • Digestion and absorption issues – Are you actually breaking down and absorbing the nutrients your body needs?
  • Bacterial imbalances – Too much ‘bad’ bacteria or not enough beneficial bacteria can impact hormone metabolism.
  • Yeast overgrowth or parasites – These can contribute to inflammation and disrupt hormone function.
  • Leaky gut – If your gut lining is compromised, toxins and excess oestrogen can re-enter circulation instead of being eliminated.

Once we identify the underlying gut issues, we can work on healing the digestive system to support hormone balance.

How to Naturally Manage Fibroids

Balancing hormones and reducing fibroid symptoms requires a multi-faceted approach:

1. Support Your Liver and Detoxification Pathways

  • Increase fibre intake to promote regular bowel movements and eliminate excess oestrogen.
  • Eat cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale) which support liver detoxification.
  • Drink plenty of water to aid toxin removal.
  • Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine, which can burden the liver.

2. Optimise Your Diet for Hormone Balance

  • Focus on whole, unprocessed foods.
  • Prioritise protein from quality sources (fish, poultry, beans, lentils) to support hormone production.
  • Include healthy fats such as avocado, nuts, seeds, and olive oil.
  • Reduce sugar and ultra-processed foods that contribute to inflammation.

3. Reduce Environmental Toxins

  • Avoid plastics where possible – opt for glass or stainless steel containers.
  • Choose organic produce when you can to reduce pesticide exposure.
  • Switch to natural skincare and cleaning products.

4. Manage Stress Effectively

  • Prioritise self-care, whether that’s yoga, meditation, or simply time to relax.
  • Ensure good sleep hygiene – aim for at least 7-8 hours per night.
  • Practise mindfulness or journaling to lower cortisol levels.

5. Exercise Regularly

  • Weight-bearing exercise supports hormone health and helps reduce excess oestrogen.
  • Walking, swimming, yoga, and strength training are great options.

Testing Options for Personalised Support

If you’re serious about tackling fibroids and want to get to the root of your symptoms, I offer lab testing to provide deeper insights:

  • Comprehensive Stool Test – To assess gut health, digestion, and absorption issues.
  • DUTCH Hormone Test – A detailed hormone analysis showing how your body is metabolising and detoxifying oestrogen, as well as the impact of stress on your hormone balance.

By supporting gut health, improving detoxification, and making targeted diet and lifestyle changes, many women find their hormones begin to rebalance – and their fibroid symptoms improve.
